United Steelworkers President David McCall urged President Donald Trump to block Nippon Steel Corp.’s bid to purchase United States Steel Corp., reiterating his opposition to the controversial proposed merger.

His comments come after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States was expected to submit its recommendations to Trump after the president ordered another review of the deal back in April.

“Allowing the sale of US Steel to Nippon, a serial trade cheater, will be a disaster for American Steelworkers, our national security and the future of American manufacturing,” McCall said in a statement May 22.

“President Trump has publicly pledged to block this sale since January 2024,” McCall said. “We now urge him to act decisively, shutting the door once and for all on this corporate sellout of American Steelworkers and defending U.S. manufacturing.”

The comments are likely a final salvo from McCall, who has stood in opposition of U.S. Steel’s proposed sale to the Japanese suitor since the deal was announced in December 2023. While McCall remains steadfast, a growing number of rank-and-file steelworkers have voiced their support for the deal, urging Trump to approve the sale as it would be a win for American workers.

Nippon Steel recently bolstered its pledge to invest in U.S. Steel in the event Trump approved the proposed takeover, offering to build a new steel mill, save existing steelworker jobs and potentially add many more unionized roles.

“We supported President Trump during his election campaign and we would like him to support us and approve the deal,” United Steelworkers Local 2227 Vice President Jason Zugai said in a phone interview. “In the Mon Valley, 95% of the rank-and-file are for this deal and want this deal to get done. That’s’ my message to President Trump. We supported you, now we need your help.”
