Sen. Public Works Chairman Sets Funding Priorities

WASHINGTON — Reducing highway fatalities, alleviating congestion and increasing security have emerged as top funding priorities in the next multiyear highway bill, according to the head of a key Senate authorizing committee.Chairman James Jeffords (I-Vt.) of the Environment and Public Works Committee called these topics “a few of the common threads” his committee will discuss in this session of Congress.Jeffords also said that “railroads should play a more important role in getting freight off the road.” And he asked what could be done to get “400-foot trucks” off city streets.
