The Port of Los Angeles said it will begin a $44.6 million container terminal expansion project听this summer.
The two-year project will improve the terminal operated by Yusen Terminals, allowing the company to simultaneously work three containerships carrying up to 13,000, 11,000 and 6,500 20-foot equivalent units, according to the port.
Currently, the largest ship that has used the terminal is an 8,500-TEU vessel, but the terminal typically receives 6,500 TEU ships.
鈥淭his project consists of strategic improvements to make Yusen a more agile terminal and strengthen our competitive edge,鈥 port Executive Director Gene Seroka said in a statement.
鈥淚n addition to making the best use of port property, it incorporates green features and practices that further our commitment to the highest environmental standards,鈥 he added.
The project is part of the port鈥檚 $800 million investment plan designed to enhance gate, berth and rail efficiencies in the next five years, according to the port.
