The Occupational Safety and Health Administration continues to tighten its regulatory fist around trucking.

The agency plans to have its ergonomics proposal out by the end of November, and has recently announced a directive extending its regulatory authority to the securing of trucks and trailers when they are boarded by forklifts. It also is working on new recordkeeping rules for all businesses.

OSHA’s recent activities are part of a trend to get closer to climbing into the cab as it regulates more and more of the industry, according to observers.

“Clearly, a lot of the things we’re seeing shows OSHA’s increased scrutiny of trucking,” said Stuart Flatow, director of occupational safety and health at American Trucking Associations.
