House Bill Targets Mexican Carriers

Mexican, and possibly Canadian, trucks entering the United States would be required to pass and pay for safety inspections if Congress passes a bill introduced by an Illinois representative.The Foreign Truck Safety Act, authored by Rep. Thomas O. Lipinski, an Illinois Democrat, would require every commercial vehicle entering the county from Mexico to pass safety inspections. Border states would be allowed to collect inspection fees from truckers to recover their costs.Canadian trucks are not the targets of the legislation 鈥 at least not now, according to Michael McLaughlin, Lipinski鈥檚 legislative director.
