Ranking second in total tonnage and first among U.S. seaports in foreign tonnage, the Port of Houston handles more than 6,000 ships and 8.4 million short tons of container traffic each year.
Growing volumes and expanding facilities mean more work for the 40 firefighters and three fireboats that handle emergencies in and around the seaport.
Marine Manager Ruben Arrendondo says his team — the only maritime firefighters in Texas — respond to maritime emergencies as well as incidents in and around the Houston ship channel.
The team recently participated in the simulated tanker accident and leak, serving as part of the planning team and as responders.
