Trucking companies hauling portions of the federal government’s $12 billion a year pallet of civilian freight likely will have to plug into Internet technologies if they want to keep the business.
The government’s paper bill of lading is slated for extinction Sept. 30, 2001, according to the General Services Administration.
On Oct. 6, GSA told transportation managers in the executive branch that they must use Web-based bills of lading from the private sector to help move federal civilian freight shipments.
While the rule does not cover the Department of Defense, the action is similar to policies adopted by the Pentagon, which uses PowerTrack, a financial service from a bank in Minnesota.
