Durable goods orders jumped 9.9% in September, led by a surge in aircraft orders, the Commerce Department said Thursday.
Bookings for non-defense capital equipment, excluding aircraft, were little changed after dipping 0.2% in August, Bloomberg reported.
Economists had forecast a 7.5% gain in over overall durable goods orders, Bloomberg said.
Durable goods include large items such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Trucking is a major beneficiary of durable goods manufacturing, hauling both components and finished goods.
