The times, they are a-changing, and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is starting to change as well.

The group’s spring workshop, scheduled for April 25 to 29 in Tampa, Fla., illustrates stirrings in the 18-year-old group. Participants are a mix of law enforcement officials and CVSA’s associate members, many of whom are trucking company representatives.

Previous sessions consisted mostly of committee meetings in which the law enforcement and motor vehicle agency officials who comprise CVSA’s membership fine-tuned the North American Inspection Criteria. The organization was established in 1981 to develop uniform commercial vehicle safety roadside inspections that would be recognized throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Two full days of the workshop are devoted to committee meetings where the more than 400 participants will hash out such issues as uniform weighing procedures for portable axle and platform scales, what type of additional training is needed to review electronic logbooks and upgrades to federal safety databases.
