California has yet to decide how to punish any diesel engine makers whose new models exceed Oct. 1 federal standards for nitrogen oxide emissions, said a spokesman for California’s Environmental Protection Agency.

While the federal EPA has said it will levy fines for each new engine that does not meet its new rules, California is weighing options to impose its own separate penalties for failing to meet the standards, said Jerry Martin, communications director with the California EPA.

“We don’t want to reward bad behavior by simply putting a fine on an engine and allowing companies to sell their engines here,” Martin told Transport Topics May 29.
