Buried amidst the denunciations of the Department of Transportation’s proposed changes in hours-of-service regulations are some alternative proposals suggested by industry groups.
Some of the positions articulated during public hearings and in written comments are the result of lengthy work by trucking associations. Others reflect the thinking of organizations that are still analyzing DOT’s proposal.
American Trucking Associations is in the former category. It took 18 months to develop a consensus opinion among its diverse membership. Dozens of witnesses at the public hearings held across the country in June urged DOT to adopt the 14-hour workday the association is advocating.
ATA also suggests that drivers should have at least 10 hours off duty each day and should be able to restart their weekly clocks after 34 consecutive hours of off-duty time.
